Ekenäs Slott (The Castle of Ekenäs)

Ekenäs Slott is a renaissance castle that was built during the period 1630 – 1644 located outside of Linköping. The easiest way to get to the castle is by car and the travelling time is approximately 20 minutes.

The castle is open every day for the public between 8 am and 8 pm. Here you can take a walk in the park, have a picnic or join one of the guided tours that will show most of the castle and give you a glimpse of the history of Sweden.

A Jousting tournament, filled with everything connected to the medieval life and a cosy Christmas Fair is held annually at Ekenäs slott. They are both worth a visit if you happened to be in town during the weekends when they are held.

Old Linköping

As a part of the outdoors-museum of Valla is a place called “gamla Linköping”, meaning Old Linköping. This is a gathering of houses from the beginning of the 20th century, to give people an idea of what it could have looked like.

In gamla Linköping you can find “cloettaboden” this is a shop with lots of candy from the Swedish candy-manufacturer Cloetta. Situated just down the street from Cloettaboden is Fenomenmagasinet, an interactive museum mainly directed at children but could also be interesting for the adult with a little self distance. In the summer you may very well see an old policeman walking round the main square with his typical old school police uniform.

A new feature to gamla Linköping is that you can get an audio guide from some points of interest with your cell phone to the cost of an average call.

The Cathedral

The Cathedral in Linköping is one of the biggest Cathedrals in the Nordic Countries. The tower reaches 107 meters up in the sky and is an important part of the skyline of Linköping. If you ever find yourself lost in Linköping, a good way to get yourself back on track is to lock for the tower and navigate yourself towards the most often visible Cathedral.

During the 1120´s a stone church was started to be built on the exact spot as where the present Cathedral is standing today. It was about have the size as the current church and somewhere around 1230 the stone church was being extended towards the east. This extention is now the oldest part of the cathedral. During the fourteenth century the Cathedral was expanded to its current length, 110 meters, and since than only smaller renovations has been made.

The Cathedral has generous opening hours and is worth a visit because of its magnificent. Different tours is available in various language. To find timetables for these tours the easiest way will be to visit the Cathedral.

The County Museum of Östergötland

At the county museum in Östergötland, which is the province were Linköping is located, you can see various different exhibitions about the history of Linköping, Östergötland and Sweden. The exhibitions varies and you can find information about what is currently going on at the museum at http://www.ostergotlandslansmuseum.se/. Connected to the museum is a restaurant called Hagdahls kök. Here you can have a lunch based on locally produced products, all home made in a lovely environment. There is also a coffee shop connected to the museum. The coffee shop has the same opening hours as the museum. Here you can come for a coffee break, a pice of pie or some hot beverage. At the museum there is also a museum store. At this store you can buy things that is related to the current exhibitions at the museum. For example ypu can find handcraft from Östergötland, books, jewelry and toys.

Linköping Air Force museum

Just outside the city in the old military area of Malmen is the military aero plane museum of Linköping situated. As mentioned earlier in the history of Linköping, the city has during the 20th century been something of an “aero plane city”, and its self-image is still defined by this heritage.

The museum does not only display aero planes, even if they are the main attraction, but also a wide variety of equipment linked to the planes. Another thing that is available in the museum is a simulator of Sweden’s most modern military aircraft, JAS 39 “griffin”.

As of July 12 2010 the museum is opening after some rebuilding and is then showing off a new “science center” where various different expeditions will be held. Focus for the main expedition is going to be “Sweden during the cold war” and the central object an aero plane that was shot down by Soviet military and has now been brought up from the sea.

Vinterljus (Winter Lights)

Every year the county of Linköping arranges a light exhibition in the centre of the city. It is a very appreciated tradition and the county spend 3 million Swedish crowns on this project every year.

To see the whole exhibition, which has no admission fee, you will have to take a walk that is about 5 kilometres. Please notice that the length and the path of the walk vary from one year to another.
